Standing 5'8 inches tall, Kat is a classic beauty, taking after her deceased mother Margaret with wavy blond hair, bright green eyes, and clear skin. She adores color, and while her work wardrobe is completely professional, there's always a little bit of the unexpected in it - a patterned pencil skirt with a bright pink silk shirt tucked into it, for instance. Kat almost never wears her hair up, and it usually hangs down her back in loose waves, only being pinned up for special events. She has a deep and abiding passion for designer handbags and often will carry a different one everyday, and she scrimps and saves to be able to afford a variety of them. Her jewelry is relatively simple, but whimsical - silver charm necklaces, quirky rings and bracelets.

Kat can be a bit of a goofball, a bit silly and reckless. She comes off as a careless flirt, though not promiscuous, and has dated a string of boys since she was fifteen, none of them particularly seriously. She's highly intelligent, but very spoiled, and has a tendency to float through life, following her sisters, rather than striking out on her own.

Possibly her defining personality trait is a lack of confidence in herself and her abilities; because of how she's been coddled by her older sisters all her life, Katriane has internalized a feeling that she can't necessarily be a serious contender. As a result, she makes choices that she knows will make it so she isn't taken seriously. She dates men who don't want commitment, and she works in a field that - while requiring both imagination and organization - is generally thought of as shallow and unnecessary. All of these encourage an image of a playful party girl, one no one needs to worry about rocking the boat, but also isn't going to make much of a mark on the world.

Almost no one knows that lack of confidence is the real reason for this, even the older sister she shares an apartment with.

history:

Kat was born to Harris and Margaret Carmichael in Glasgow, Scotland, two years after her elder sister Sophie, and for the most part lived an idyllic childhood. The Carmichaels were a reasonably wealthy family, with both Harris and Margaret holding prestigious professional positions in the city, and their was the expectation that their daughters would follow in their footsteps. Both Sophie and and Katriana were sent to local private schools, and there was always some pressure to perform academically. This was always something that came a little more difficultly for Kat, who was a gregarious, charming girl, but not always a natural student the way her elder sister was.

Still, despite these slight pressures - which were really no more than any parents might put on their children - Kat had a very happy childhood in Glasgow, right up until the day when her parents died in a motor vehicle accident. It had been their date night, and the girls had been home alone - Sophie was already fifteen, and old enough to babysit. They didn't know what had happened until a constable knocked on their door in the middle of the night and woke them to break the news.

The next several days passed in a blur until the funeral had been arranged and performed, and within a few weeks both Sophie and Kat were relocated to Edinburgh, where Margaret's two sisters lived. There'd been some contention over whether the two girls should go to their mother's relatives or their father's and even some discussion of splitting them up - Kat was only eleven and had a lot of growing up left to do, but Sophie was just enough older - but in the end, that was considered to be too much, and they went to live with Aunt Bridget and her husband Ian Abernathy in the Scottish capital. Also close by was their other aunt, Victoria, and her stern husband, Alan Sinclair, who took great interest in the girls and their education.

Since they weren't, Kat grew up as happily as could be managed in the circumstances. The loss of her parents was a hole that Aunt Bridget and Uncle Ian couldn't really fill, and that Sophie couldn't even really fill, but it was an experience that drew the two sisters closer together than they might have otherwise been - considering the age difference. Alan Sinclair had a tendency towards belittling games that certainly left their mark; Kat was always a little unsure of herself, academically, and that didn't change. The worst years, in her opinion, were after Sophie moved out of the Abernathy house to go to university and Katriana became a de facto only child. Sophie had, in a way, always been her support, and it was more difficult to get on without her. But she managed it, and two years later she moved out herself, attending university locally at Queen Margaret University, where she took a course in events management.

It wasn't quite the serious, prestigious field that her parents and aunts and uncles had envisioned, but Kat had always been good at parties. It suited, she thought, and she's certainly begun to excel in it in the three years since graduation.

Now, if she could just find a nice boy...
